John Robert Garmatz was born on October 20,1952,in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Robert W. Garmatz and Florence Gruber Garmatz. He died on February 4, 2009, in Winterset, Iowa, with Alzheimer's Disease. He was 56 years old. ....
He graduated from Lutheran High School South in St. Louis, Missouri. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education from Concordia University, Seward, Nebraska.
He taught one year before becoming a counselor with troubled teens.
He went on to get a Masters of Science in Human Development and the Family from the University of Nebraska. In 1995 he received an Associate in Applied Science - Associate Degree in Nursing from Durham Technical Community College in Durham, North Carolina.
His last job was as a counselor of men who were substance and alcohol abusers
John was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his sister Ellen Bushre (Rudy Rentoli), sister Susan Jordan (Rev. Richard), nephew Rev. Chris Bushre (Julie), one great nephew Aidan and one great niece Allison, stepmother Margaret Garmatz, his long-time dear friend, Regis McDonald ....
