Carol (Schall) Beck, born in 1928, died in 2002 (obituary).
Carol [Beck] was born Dec. 20, 1928, in Buffalo, N.Y. The first of three daughters of Walter and Elfriede Schall, she grew up in South Euclid, Ohio, where her father taught at St. John Lutheran School.
Carol met Ted at Concordia High School in River Forest, Ill., when both enrolled as freshmen in 1942. They began dating as seniors in high school and continued to date through their years at Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, marrying on Aug. 5, 1950, at Zion Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, where Carol's father had taken a call to be a teacher and church organist.
Because of the need for teachers, Carol began teaching full-time at St. Paul's Lutheran School in Chicago in 1949 -- delaying completion of her bachelor's degree for 25 years. She completed the degree at Concordia College in Seward in 1974 after raising three children.
Carol opened the Humpty-Dumpty Nursery School in 1964, teaching 3- and 4-year-olds. She taught her last classes in 1984 and then retired from teaching.
Active in Republican politics beginning in the 1960s, she was elected to the Seward County Board of Commissioners as a commissioner representing Seward in 1980. She served on the board until 1995, including 10 years as chairwoman. She also served on the Nebraska State Jail Standards Board.
